Tulsa is a mix of Old West town, oil-rich metropolis, and mid-sized plains city. It is anything but a boring backwater. With diverse choices when it comes to museums, historic sites, natural beauty and cultural attractions, this surprising city on the Oklahoma Plains is not at all boring. Tulsa is one of those cities that people expect to have a family-friendly, mid-American vibe. True, that atmosphere is prevalent, but there is a more cosmopolitan side to the city as well.
Budget
Visit the Gilcrease Museum (1400 North Gilcrease Museum Road). This unique exhibit space has one of the finest collections of Native American and Western art in the United States. Admission is free, with a donation optional. Gilcrease sometimes holds special exhibitions.
Cherry Street Farmer's Market (on 15th and Peoria) takes place every Saturday morning. This is a good place to get a taste of Oklahoma's rural characteristics. Aside from seeing and tasting locally grown produce, there is a festival atmosphere and occasional activities.
Value
Tulsa's downtown area is filled with art deco buildings. There are walking tours available, but it would be just as easy to slip on some comfortable footwear and spend a morning strolling through the neighborhood yourself.
The Ida Dennie Willis Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys (627 N Country Club Drive) is a museum filled with antique childhood favorites. The number of dolls in the collection reaches more than 2,000. There are also displays of other miniatures and doll houses.
Tulsa is filled with parks. Woodward Park is home to the Tulsa Rose Gardens (in full bloom during the springtime). There are also trails and a greenbelt around the river. Aside from walking, there are plenty of outdoor cafés for relaxing amidst the natural surroundings during the summer.
Splurge
Safari's Sanctuary (26881 East 58th Street) is, as its name suggests, a home for exotic animals. This is not an amusement park, a la Disneyworld. The park is run by a non-profit organization that provides home for injured or captured exotic animals. Rare species like tigers, kangaroos, and lemurs are housed within the sanctuary. Visitors are welcome, but they must make an appointment during the week.
In mid-October, Tulsa is home to one of the largest (according to some) Oktoberfests outside of Munich. While the edibles and suds have a decidedly Germanic flare, there is live music - the occasional Polka, but also country and rock - and a carnival.
