Sacramento has a unique blend of historic and modern attractions.  No matter what your interest, there will be something to seduce you in this state capitol city.  Sacramento's biggest attraction might be its people.  They are known for their friendly, low-key attitudes and for their ethnic and cultural diversity.  Those traits come out even in the city's mainstream tourist attractions.

Budget

On the evening of the Second Saturday of each month, Midtown Sacramento's art galleries open their doors to the public (6 p.m. start time).  Not only is this a fun way to get a taste of California's contemporary arts scene, but it is also a good time to socialize.  Many cafés and restaurants in the area stay open later so that gallery-goers can continue the evening's fun after the artists shutter their shops (around 9 p.m.).

The Sacramento Zoo is a mid-sized zoo with a decent collection of animals.  Traveling families can buy a ticket package that includes admission to the nearby Fairy Tale Town.  Though it is not comparable to the San Francisco Zoo, this family-friendly venue is definitely worth an afternoon.

California State Railroad Museum (111 I Street) is one of the main attractions in Sacramento's Old Town.  It houses a large collection of trains and railroad equipment.  It seems like this would be a bit of a tourist trap, but it is enjoyable, especially if you have children or a strong interest in trains.  The price is right too: $8 for adults, $3 for kids.  Afterwards, you can wander around Old Town with its wooden sidewalks and old west flavor.  Avoid the restaurants and souvenir shops, though.  Most are tourist traps.    

California State Capitol Building is open daily to visitors.  This is the seat of power for the most populous state in the US.  Though the exterior is the typical domed "state capitol building," there are some interesting pieces of art and interior design inside.  Guided tours are available.  

Splurge   

The Crocker Art Museum houses one of the oldest collections of art in the state.  It is easy to see the unique culture of California in the cultural influences and social outlook of the artwork. 

The Jazz Jubilee takes place over the Memorial Day weekend.  Jazz bands from all over the US and the world come to Sacramento to play at one of the many host venues around the city.  Tickets to the hottest concerts are hard to come by, but there are plenty of cheaper alternatives.
