Things to Do in Nashville
Nashville is a city that wears many hats. It is the center of the country music industry, but also serves as home base for mainstream music acts. The cuisine and culture of the city are both steeped in history and influenced by modern cosmopolitan ideas. Nashville is not trying to relive the glory days of the old South. It is a thoroughly modern city with museums, pro sports, and an influx of new residents from around the globe. Though it is most definitely a big city on the rise, it does not have the typical big city atmosphere.
Here are the best things to do in the city of Nashville and its environs:
Budget
Nashville is a historic city. Bicentennial Mall, which stretches out in front of the State Capitol building, is a great place to get a glimpse into Nashville’s past. There are monuments and memorials and a market nearby.
Fort Negley is a reconstructed Civil War fort. It was the site of the Battle of Nashville in 1864. Also in the vicinity is the Tennessee State Museum, which has over 70,000 feet of exhibit space.
You can also wander Midtown, which is Nashville’s cultural center. This section of the city features art galleries, fine restaurants, historic landmarks and buildings that can only be described as unique. An example of this is the Parthenon. It sits in Centennial Park and is a replica of - you guessed it – the ancient Greek building for which it is named.
Value
There are several museums in the Nashville area. The Frist Museum of Visual Arts is a family-friendly art museum with lots of gallery space featuring national and international artists. The Nashville Zoo is another good family venue.
There are several quality golf courses inside the city limits and several more nearby. If you do not want to play a sport yourself, the Nashville Predators (NHL) and Tennessee Titans (NFL) are good options for spectator sports. Both are extremely popular in Nashville and are vocally supported by fans during home games.
Splurge
The General Jackson Showboat cruises up and down the river starting out near the Grand Ole Opry. The cruise includes a buffet and a theater performance. It is, however, quite costly.
Country music fans, history buffs and anyone who likes live music should check out the Grand Ole Opry. This historic concert hall is Mecca for country music singers on the way to the top. It has been in operation since 1925 and has been the venue for the biggest names in country music past and present.
