Because of its sheer size, Miami is a city of nearly endless possibilities. Most people come to the city because of tropical weather and beaches. But the classic architecture of some neighborhoods, the reasonably priced restaurants, and the spicy mix of Latin cultures means that visitors would be wise to pack more than their sunscreen and swimming suits. Here is the best of what Miami has to offer.
Budget
Little Havana has always had a reputation for danger. That reputation is partially deserved, but it is worth venturing there, especially to Calle Ocho (8th Street) during the Calle Ocho festivities. The restaurants in the area are dirt cheap and serve tasty, authentic Cuban food.
The Ancient Spanish Monastery (16711 West Dixie Highway) was originally standing in Spain. It was bought by a wealthy American entrepreneur, but sat in New York Harbor until it was relocated to Miami. Despite its long journey, this monastery is an interesting site. It dates back to the 12th century and is now a working church and popular place for nuptials.

The Frost Art Museum (SW 107th Ave) has a diverse array of displays and collections. There is a huge gallery of 1960s and 1970s photography, as well as an exhibit featuring pre-Columbian artifacts found in the Florida area.
Visitors get a taste of the Spanish colonial era at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens (3251 South Miami Ave). This Spanish-inspired compound features a main house with period furniture and artifacts. There is also an impressive 10-acre garden and some spectacular views of Biscayne Bay.
Jungle Island (1111 Jungle Island Trail) is a tropical park with animals and exhibits. It is a touristy place, but quite family-friendly and informative.
Splurge
Miami MetroZoo (12400 SW 152nd Street) is a unique zoological garden that hosts a variety of animals from around the globe. The climate in Miami means that these species can live outdoors year-round. There is a large, free-range exhibit where animals can roam freely. This is the oldest zoo in Florida and one of the oldest in the country.
South Beach is a 24-hour scene. During the daytime, the beach is filled with the beautiful people. And the party scene in the nightclubs lining the beach is an all night/every night affair. If the fleshly vibe is too much, don't leave South Beach. Inland neighborhoods feature some of the finest examples of Art-Deco architecture in the US. Guides tours are available.
