Belize City serves as a major transportation hub for visitors heading to the Cays and private islands around the peninsula, but it's also home to a number of historic sites and attractions.  You can visit museums, take a guided tour of ancient cathedrals, or see contemporary art at the local performing arts center. Here are some of the top attractions to enjoy in Belize City, Belize:

Museum of Belize
This museum is located inside a former prison and features dozens of photographs, archaeological collections, Mayan artifacts and historical documents.  You can take a guided tour of the grounds to learn about the history of the building and gain some insight about ancient Mayan culture.  It's located at Gaborurel Lane near the Central Bank Building and is open Monday through Friday.

Maritime Museum
Head to the oceanfront to see the ferryboats making their way to Ambergris Caye, and learn about the rich history of the marines in this famous port.  The museum features a large collection of shells, marine animals and a large 3-D model of the barrier reef.  You can also learn about the vessels and ships that served the country during the war era, and see some ancient Mayan artifacts.  The museum is located at N. Front Street and Queen Street.

St. John's Cathedral
This old brick cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Central America.  It was built by slaves in 1812, and is made entirely out of old bricks. The Anglican Church once hosted coronation ceremonies, and you can take a guided tour of the venue to see the beautiful architecture and diverse collection of artifacts.  It's located on the corner of Albert and Regent Streets, and admission is free.

Bliss Institute of Performing Arts
It's located in the heart of the cultural center of Belize City and features a large rehearsal hall, a spacious performing arts center and galleries that house local artwork and artifacts.  Take a tour of the grounds to learn more about the history of this popular venue, and head to the outer edge to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Belize Harbour.  It's located on the Southern Foreshore between Church and Bishop Streets, and admission is free.

Old Belize
Take a guided tour of this popular tourist attraction to learn about the history of Belize from the days of the Mayans to present day.  The venue features dozens of exhibits and a vast collection of artifacts, giving you some insight about the rich history and culture of the city.  It's located at Mile 5 on the Western Highway, and is open seven days a week.
