The majestic island of Barbados was owned by England for over three centuries, but now stands as an independent nation in the Caribbean.  The tropical islands attract thousands of visitors from all over the world, and it has also become one of the world's most popular cruise ports.  Whether you're visiting for a weekend getaway or a week long excursion, here are some of the area's top attractions you won't want to miss!

The Barbados Museum
This museum is housed in the former British Military Prison and was built in 1817.  It now serves as the headquarters of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, and features several displays and exhibits of artifacts for the Amerindians, a Children's Gallery, and furnishings from old plantation houses that once occupied the area. 

Sam Lords Castle
This Georgian mansion was built in 1820 and served as the home of Samuel Hall Lord.  It's located in the parish of ST. Philip, and now houses dozens of antiques, furnishings and artwork.  Take a tour of the castle to learn about the rich history of this famous landmark.

South Point Lighthouse
This famous red and white landmark sits on the south cost of the island of Barbados and cruise ships that depart from Miami typically go past this famous point.  The South Point lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be built in Barbados, and it stands at 89 feet above sea level.

Sir Frank Sugar Museum
The Sugar Museum is one of several Barbados National Trust properties, and serves as a record of the sugar plantation industry during the 18th and 19th centuries.  The sugar mill is located off Highway 2A next to the Portvale Sugar Factory.

The Heritage Village
This living museum features several classic Chattel houses that house old ceramics and pottery, and artwork from local artists and craftsmen.  The village is also home to a traditional Rum Shop that serves freshly made fish cakes and the famous Cockspur Rum. The village is located at Codrington Hill in St. Michael.
