Things to Do in Atlanta
Atlanta is a large city. People often refer to it as the center of the New South because it is the most modern and cosmopolitan place in the southeastern US. But that does not mean that the past (the “Old South”) has completely disappeared. One of the best things about Atlanta is that visitors can get a taste of both the modern and historic. And, because the city is so varied, each district holds fresh experiences.
Here are the best things to do on a trip to Atlanta.
Budget
Try the parks. Piedmont Park (Midtown) and Centennial Park (Downtown) are both good public spaces to visit, but for different reasons. Centennial is in the city center and has fountains in summer, ice skating in winter and views of the Atlanta skyline year-round. Piedmont is known for its expanses of green, its ball fields, walking and biking paths, lakes, and ample picnicking spots.
Gone with the Wind has been a phenomenon since the book and subsequent movie came out in the early half of the past century. The Margaret Mitchell House and Museum in Midtown is where the author wrote the famous novel. The suburb of Marietta is home to the Gone with the Wind Movie Museum. Fans of the movie or book will enjoy a visit to both places.
Value
Center for Puppetry Arts (Midtown) is a fun place regardless of the ages of the people that you are traveling with. There are interactive exhibits and performances and even a series called New Directions, which features cutting-edge puppetry. Many adults find this particular program quite interesting.
Millennium Gate (Atlantic Station District) is a replica of the Arc de Triumph in Paris. You’d be forgiven for calling it a bit over-the-top, but the panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline from the observation deck atop the gate make it a worthwhile place to visit.
Splurge
The Georgia Aquarium is one of the world’s largest. It features numerous tanks and exhibits. When you buy the Atlanta City Pass, you get admission to the aquarium as well as other popular sites like the zoo, Coke World and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Coke World celebrates - you guessed it - the world’s most popular cola. Different flavors and different versions from all over the world are displayed. Though it is aimed squarely at tourists, Coke World is not as much of a tourist trap as it seems. If you purchase the Atlanta City Pass, it is definitely worth your time to visit.
