Sky Harbor is one of the largest airports in the American Southwest. Aside from Phoenix-bound fliers, travelers whose destinations include surrounding cities like Mesa, Tempe and Scottsdale use this airport. Visitors to the Grand Canyon and other natural sites in the Sonoran Desert often travel though Sky Harbor en route to their destination.

Parking: Short term garages near the terminals are $4 per hour or $25 per day. Economy lots, served by free shuttle buses, cost between $8-$10 per day.

Ground Transportation
Visitors will need to take a shuttle from the baggage claim area to the rental car center. Travelers might find better deals by traveling into the city before renting a car (see "Insider Tips" below). Free public transit shuttle buses leaves on a regular basis from the baggage claim level of each terminal. They takes passengers to the light rail station on Washington Avenue, just outside of the airport. A ride on the light rail or bus costs the $1.75 for a one-way trip. Taxi fares to Downtown Phoenix are not expensive, averaging $20-$30. Taxis can be hailed outside of each terminal on the north curbside.

Terminal(s) information
Sky Harbor has three terminals numbered 2, 3, and 4. Terminal 1 was torn down nearly 20 years ago. Terminal 4 is dominated by PHX's two main airlines, Southwest and US Airways. The most restaurants, shops and amenities are found in this terminal. Other major national carriers, such as Delta, Northwest, American and JetBlue, use Terminal 3. Terminal 2 is used by Continental, United, and Alaska Airlines. Terminal 4 is the newest building at PHX and features award-winning architectural design.

Places to Eat
Most eating options are located in Terminal 4 (McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and others). However, the other two terminals also have the choice of sit-down restaurants and food-court-style eateries, including Wendy's and Sbarro (both in T3) and a host of less famous vendors such as Taberna del Tequila and JD Hoggs BBQ.

Amenities
Unlike many other large airports, Phoenix offers free wi-fi throughout the airport. There are also information desks in each terminal that are staffed during regular airport hours. Visitors can travel between terminals on regularly running shuttle buses.

Insider Tip
Airport car rental companies put a stiff tax on car rentals for out-of-state customers. However, it is often possible to take public transportation into the city and rent a car from an agency there. Visitors who do this may be able to avoid the taxes.
