Discount travel has become a scary alternative for many travelers. Bad experiences with recently canceled flights, bad customer service or other actions in the industry have made many travelers hesitant to choose discount travel markets. There are ways to travel for less and still protect your trip.

Purchase your tickets with your credit cards – especially if you have a "premier" card. Many of these higher limit cards offer customers built in protections when purchases are made. You may be able to turn to them if a problem occurs. Keep in mind that it is not just the discount segment that has had problems. Always protect yourself when you travel.

Read ALL the fine print. It is important you know exactly what you are agreeing to before you agree to it. Paying for a ticket is the same as signing a contract with the travel company. If you don't like the company's policies then look for other discount travel options or choose another alternative altogether.

Discount travel does not have to be cheap to be inexpensive. You can use loyalty clubs, rewards cards and other incentive programs to book your discount travel experience. Sometimes being members of these programs helps give you alternatives if a problem arises.

Give yourself time. Make sure that your connecting flights are not too close together. You want to have time to make your way to the terminal, but you also want to plan in time for any problems or bumps that may come your way.
